Lesson 3 – The Block-In
Welcome to Lesson 3 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” which is one of the most important lessons in this entire program. This lesson is the cure for the all-too common problem of your drawing running off the page (or being too small), and of different parts of your drawing being too big or small in relation to other parts. So much about good drawing skills comes back to a good block-in!
Lesson 4 – Values
Welcome to Lesson 4 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed”! Shading and values are the “fun stuff” of drawing that so many people are eager to focus on, and it IS fun – but it works when it builds on a good foundation. Now that you’v learned how to block-in properly, this lesson shows you with both graphite and charcoal how to render realistic values so your drawing appears three-dimensional.
Lesson 5 – Distances & Pro...
Welcome to Lesson 5 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” where you’ll build on what you learned in Lesson 3 – The Block-In to get all the proportions and distances accurate in your drawing! This lesson, however, takes it to greater levels, both when your drawing is the same size as what you’re drawing and when it’s different (both take unique approaches). Taking your time with this lesson will yield rewards for the rest of your drawing career!
Lesson 6 – Gesture Drawing
Welcome to Lesson 6 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” where you’ll begin to explore drawing the human figure! Before jumping in to drawing the details of the figure, you’ll learn first how to really capture that visceral movement that’s so unique to human subjects and imbue your drawings with it. This lesson is fun and fast-paced and many of my students have said not only was this enjoyable but it also really had an impact on their figure drawings! But this lesson isn’t just about the human form – it’s about gesture in any subject, including animals! The real impact of this lesson is to give your drawings – no matter the subject or genre – a real sense of flow and movement.
Lesson 7 – Drawing the Form
Welcome to Lesson 7 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” where you’ll take what you learned in the last lesson to get into the nitty-gritty of drawing a human subject. You’ll learn a number of helpful guidelines that can help you SEE a human subject and you’ll experiment with both graphite and charcoal to create a figure drawing.
Lesson 8 – Drawing the Face
Welcome to Lesson 8 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” where you’ll learn all about drawing the human face! When drawing a broader figure drawing, you don’t need to think so much about the details of the human face, but what about when you’re drawing a portrait? Then it’s ALL about the face! This lesson is modeled after the previous lesson on drawing the form by giving you some helpful guidelines to recognize and follow in your portraits, and then giving you several chances to put those into practice with several step-by-step demonstrations. Faces are my passion – I could spend hours drawing nothing but faces and be happy as a clam. But while it’s easy to think it’s too hard for the average artist to draw faces well, that’s just not true. Anyone can learn to draw even complex subjects by using the concepts and techniques I teach in my program. So get ready to master another challenge!
Lesson 9 – Perspective
Perspective is present in any scene in life and there are a number of different types of perspective. As you refine your observation skills, you’ll begin to consciously notice the perspective of anything you see! As with every lesson in this course, this lesson aims to give you a solid foundation without getting too technical and complicated. You will finish then lesson both understanding basic types of perspective and how to render them accurately on your paper. Maybe even, like me, you’ll find it’s actually really fun to draw perspective in your subjects, and at the very least, you won’t be intimidated by scenes show very definite, structured perspective. You will be empowered to draw any scene because you know you have the skills to ground a composition in proper perspective!
Lesson 10 – Landscapes
Welcome to Lesson 10 of “Drawing Secrets Revealed” which will give you a thorough foundation for drawing landscapes! Landscapes are some of the most beautiful, compelling subjects to draw, which is why it’s its own genre in art. This lesson will teach you a simple framework to understand landscapes, as well as common exceptions and […]
