There’s a reason Basic Shapes is the second lesson. It may seem far too basic to spend an entire lesson on, but it can be surprisingly difficult to identify shapes in a composition without a little guidance and that is essential to more advanced drawing techniques. And when you have trained your eyes to see all the basic shapes in a composition, especially if it’s a complex composition or a human subject, you will find that composition suddenly significantly simplified. Add to that the Elements of Lighting and ellipses I cover, and you’ve got a lot of drawing concepts covered in one lesson!

I thought it best to start off this drawing series not with our first technique but with a quick lesson on the philosophy behind the series, pencil grips, best practices for effective artists, basic shading techniques, as well as which materials to have ready (it’s very frustrating to be suddenly inspired to begin a drawing and realizing you don’t have the materials you need!). I strongly encourage you to take this lesson to heart since it will make you more successful in all the subsequent lessons.
